From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Personalized cancer treatment may depend on what we know about genes and how they influence tumors and their growth and spread. Now scientists have made a breast cancer breakthrough.

Breast Cancer Falls Into Four Genetic Types
We usually divide breast tumors into hormone sensitive, protein type, or triple-negative. Those divisions help determine treatment options. But down the road, the four basic genetic types may help scientists provide targeted, customized treatments that fight this beast more effectively.
See More About:  breast cancer  diagnosis  genetic testing

Do You Need Genetic Testing?
I was diagnosed 10 years ago, and nobody mentioned genetic testing. I'm sure it would have been interesting, but at that point my choice of drugs and surgery would have been the standard selections. Nowadays things are getting more precise, but we still have a ways to go. Genetic testing is leading us into that future.

HER2/neu and Diagnosis
Although "HER2" sounds like a classy fashion label, it actually stands for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. Herceptin is the drug that shrinks and targets HER2 breast cancers. The HER2 protein is one of the four genetic types of breast cancer.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer
Triple Negative Breast Cancer - TNBC - is another genetic subtype that may be treated more successfully now that scientists know more about how it resembles a certain variation of ovarian cancer. TNBC has been difficult to treat, but having this new genetic info is opening doors that may pull the rug out from under these resistant cancer types.

About Breast Cancer: Kathy Bates' Second Diagnosis

Daily Life

From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
There's a memorable nurse in the Stephen King movie, "Misery" who takes special care of a snow-bound novelist. Kathy Bates played that nurse, Annie Wilkes, as a psychotic, obsessive "number one fan." Let's hope that while Bates was recently in the hospital, none of her nurses measured up to Annie!

Kathy Bates Recovering From Breast Cancer
After recovering from a double mastectomy, Kathy Bates got on Twitter and shared her breast cancer diagnosis. She's been down the road with cancer before, and she's pretty tough. I get the impression that she isn't focused on cancer, though - she seems to want another good role to work on.

Adventures of a One-Breasted Woman - Not the Average Memoir
Many women have written breast cancer memoirs. This is one is different - it tells about the years of recovery and survival. Susan Cummings, a 20-year survivor, wrote the book that she couldn't find after treatment - and shares it with us now.

About Breast Cancer: New Study on Effects of Chemobrain

From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Perhaps someday, chemobrain will be preventable. But then, I won't have an excuse for forgetting things! A new study confirms that chemo can affect your memory and sense of direction.

Chemobrain Affects Breast Cancer Patients
I kept going to work during my chemo treatments, but gradually I had a harder time with anything printed. Understanding something in text didn't always come easy. And then I'd be driving home, and forget which turn to take. My memory eventually got better, but I still blame the chemo. New research backs up the suspicion that chemo messes with your head.

Coping With Your Brain on Chemo
There were days during my chemo treatments that I felt about 90 years old. My entire person ran in slow motion, but especially my brain. There are some easy things you can do to cope with it. My fave is taking hot tub soaks!

Before Your First Chemo Treatment
It was very overwhelming for me to enter the chemo room and sit in a patient's chair. I felt awkward and scared, didn't like the chatty video they made me watch, and I just wanted to run away. Pay attention to what you eat and drink before an infusion, and make sure you know what to expect. That alone can lower your stress levels.

Be a Chemo Support Buddy
My husband went with me to each chemo date until things started to go smoothly. He kept me calm and prevented me from walking out. Here are 10 ways to support someone when they are in the chemo room.
