March is Lymphedema Awareness Month

The National Lymphedema Network (NLN) is so proud to be the organization that initiated this global movement of increasing awareness of lymphedema. Our founder, Saskia R.J. Thiadens, advocated to make March 6 Lymphedema Day in honor of the day the NLN became incorporated as a nonprofit. Now it has grown to be known as World Lymphedema Day.

To celebrate and work towards our mission of increasing of awareness, we have planned an entire month of educational sessions intended for the patient

community. We want to let you know that we are here to work for you and to empower you with knowledge.

All webinars will be recorded and made available by the end of each day with the exception of a couple of sessions where the presenter requested otherwise.

This webinar series is complimentary and is our service to the community.

We look forward to interacting with you in the webinars.

NLN 2021 Lymphedema Day Awards

There are many lymphedema leaders out there who make significant contributions to the lymphedema community, and we want to hear all about their great work. Tell us about the impact they are having on their local communities and nominate them so that they can have the chance to be recognized and acknowledged. Three nominees will be chosen and will receive an NLN certificate, complimentary NLN membership for one year, and complimentary registration to the 2021 conference. They will be given the opportunity to share their message in the next NLN Magazine. Self-nominations welcome. Nominations accepted through 11:59 pm ET on March 5. Awardees will be announced during our webinar on March 6, Lymphedema Day 2021.

New NLN Membership Structure

First and foremost, we would like to thank all NLN Members for their support and engagement. We are continuously working to build more and more value for your membership support. We are very excited to connect with you more closely and discover what you find most meaningful. To start, we have a new membership platform that was supposed to be launched January 20, however we were delayed because of complex integrations that needed to be set up. The new launch date will be March 3, where by the end of the day you will receive an email requesting that you reset your password. You will no longer need your NLN ID number as your email address will be your unique identifier. The new NLN membership structure is simpler compared to what it was previously and is as follows.

Supporter - $50

Member - $500

Organization - $500

The NLN supporter will be able to attend exclusive webinars and receive CEU certificates, have access to our library of videos and to our archive of publications, receive a discount to NLN conferences, receive a digital version of the NLN Magazine, and be able to participate in discussion forums.

The NLN member will receive the aforementioned benefits of the supporter however with the discount to NLN conferences being greater. Members will additionally be able to submit applications to the NLN Garment Program, drop in on NLN Office Hours for impromptu questions and clinical support, and be a part of focused lymphedema mentorship labs. We are mindful of the potential financial impact the pandemic may have had and we are extending a 50% discount for new memberships and membership renewals in 2021.

Lymphedema Employment Opportunity

Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine is seeking a Lymphedema Therapist. The Lymphedema Therapist is responsible for direct patient service; clinical consultation with clients (and support systems as necessary) having lymphedema, lymphedema related issues, or breast health concerns. The lymphedema specialist may be expected to participate in community outreach initiatives including education of other healthcare practitioners and the general public. The therapist is expected to participate in continuing education within the scope of their profession and lymphedema specialty. The incumbent performs all duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. Mercy Hospital developed the first lymphedema treatment center in Northern New England in 1996. Northern Light Mercy Lymphedema Care Occupational Therapists exclusively treat all forms of lymphedema and lymphedema related conditions with specialty training in head and neck lymphedema and breast cancer rehabilitation.

Lymphedema Survey on Pelvic Wrap

"I have treated cases of genital and pelvic lymphedema and have had a tough time with compliance/willingness to be bandaged during the decongestion phase. I reached out to a woman who makes a pelvic and groin band out of neoprene and she made me a prototype of a pelvic wrap to try. It is working so we are now in the process of doing research to see if this is something to further explore and put into production. I would like to know if other therapists are interested in integrating such a wrap."
