The National Lymphedema Network would like to thank Eric Ansart & Jillian Hampson for creating the 2020 NLN Conference logo for us. Please read below to learn about the inspiration behind its creation.
The Inspiration
When conceptualizing the graphic for NLN 2020, "A Magical Experience of Lymphology," it needed to tell a story of imagination and lighthearted whimsy. When I think of magic, I think of the mind and its mysterious ability to spark imagination. I also think of a time in my life when magic felt real as a child, plucking dandelions, believing full heartedly that when I blew on the fuzzies while making a wish, those wishes would set off into the world and come true someday. The mind and dandelions. Objectively, these seem like two different concepts, but are they?

The dandelion is a complex, magical little plant. Just like the neurons in our brain fire, setting off other neurons in a chain reaction, the dandelion seedlings act in a similar fashion. Every dandelion pushes out its seeds creating more and more dandelions the way our brain creates more and more connections through neurons. Much like the mind, the dandelion’s rooting system is an intertwining network. If you cut the main root it will simply grow back into multiple plants. This also relates to the way the brain heals itself after injury. When cells are damaged, some cells will regenerate themselves, and some have neighboring cells that help breach the gap.

I loved working on this concept (especially the neuron puffs!) and it was both an honor as well as a delight to contribute to this year’s NLN logo design.
