It has become a day when lymphedema advocates, clinicians, researchers, educators, and many more people who support the cause increase their efforts to promote the awareness of lymphedema. What a wonderful thing to see how this day has grown over the years!
What may have become overshadowed by all the celebration and festivities is this day's history and how it all began.
Saskia Thiadens, is a nurse who was the visionary who founded the National Lymphedema Network on March 6, 1988. This is why this date was chosen to be Lymphedema Awareness Day. She worked tirelessly for years to grow the organization with the mission of bringing awareness to lymphedema.
In 1994, her passion inspired her to collaborate with local politicians in Virginia to dedicate the first Lymphedema Day to recognize the cause. Saskia dedicated the moment a mother who had metastatic breast cancer and lymphedema. This mother and her husband were scientists in California who adopted an inter-racial child. Saskia continued her annual efforts, traveling the country to honor patients, clinicians. | | | The rest is history and here we are today reaping the benefits of Saskia's pioneering efforts.
