Let's keep the goals of surgery in mind: it's to get rid of the cancer! For most patients who choose lumpectomy, breast-conserving surgery is enough. But for about 1 in 5 women, we wind up back in the operating room for another procedure.

Surgical margins are very important, and most of the time, a lumpectomy will do just fine. A new study shows that one-fifth of patients will need to go back for a re-excision or a mastectomy. That was my experience, and it changed my life, that's for sure.
