Breast Cancer Newsletter from BellaOnline.com

There is exciting research being done in Stockholm that may have a huge impact on the way breast cancer is treated based on changes that occur to the tumor during the course of the disease. Here's the scoop:

Tumor Status Changes Affect Treatment
New research shows the hormonal status of tumors changes throughout the course of the disease; however, treatment is usually based on the initial status. Therefore patients may not be receiving optimal treatment.

About Breast Cancer: Do You Have to Retake Tamoxifen?

From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
I have a love/hate - or maybe tolerate/hate relationship with Tamoxifen. It's an important drug for survivors of estrogen sensitive breast cancer. But is causes menopausal side effects, for which many of us take an SSRI. What if your antidepressant canceled out the benefits of your Tamoxifen - would you have to take 5 more years of this drug?

The Zoloft-Tamoxifen Aftermath
I had estrogen-fueled breast cancer, so Tamoxifen was necessary for me. My doctor also had me take Zoloft for mood and hot flashes. Now we know that my little "happy pill" may have prevented my Tamoxifen from working so well. I contacted an oncologist and got the straight scoop on this - for you and for me.

Please take the Tamoxifen and Your Love Life Poll. Your responses are anonymous!

Mother and Daughter Breast Cancer - Is It Inevitable?
One of my newsletter subscribers wrote in asking about her odds of developing the same type of breast cancer that took her mother almost 30 years ago. Understandably, just having a mammogram raises her fears and questions. Being well-informed and taking charge of lowering her risk may help. Here's how she (and many others) can deal with this question.

Find Free or Low-Cost Mammograms
It's still October - National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this month, it's easier to get a free or low-cost mammogram. If you're on a budget and haven't had your breast screening, this is a good time to seek out a clinic or agency for help. Here are some ways to find the right place.

10 Best Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets
The purchase of each bracelet in this list generates a contribution to a breast cancer support organization. Many of these items feature pink, while others have multiple colors. Prices range from $1 each, up to $99. These are a way to show your support for survivors while also donating to the cause. Remember to Pink Responsibly!

About Breast Cancer: Tamoxifen And Your Sex Life

Breast Cancer

From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Okay, I know this is a very personal issue, but so many of us deal with it that I decided we should talk. Some oncologists don't really address it, so you're sent to your ob/gyn. Then your ob/gyn suggests a sex therapist, but your insurance won't cover that. So how do you cope?

How Does Tamoxifen Affect Your Sex Life?
A sudden drop in estrogen really affects your vagina. That can change up your love life really quickly! So let's start out by taking a poll. Don't worry - your responses will be completely anonymous! You can submit a range of responses, or if you're feeling bold, leave me a comment.

Breast Cancer May Affect Body Image
In addition to dealing with low estrogen levels, you may now look different - whether you're wearing your best suit or your birthday suit! And you may be trying to decide if you can - or can't - trust your body after this. You can get help to deal with self-esteem and self-perception. It's a good investment in your recovery.

Where's My Hair?
Before chemo, my hair grew down to my hips, and it was like a member of the family. I hated the idea of losing it, and wept like a waterfall when I was told that chemo was necessary for me. Hair loss affected my self-esteem greatly. You may be glad to know that not every chemo drug causes your hair to go on vacation.

Pamper Your Nails During Chemotherapy
I was fascinated by the Beau's lines that appeared on my fingernails during chemo. I actually came to think of them as marks of survival - one line for each infusion! I felt better about my hands and nails as I pampered them during, and after, my treatments.

Dear Friends of NLN,

On November 2-4, 2011, lymphedema advocates from around the country will be traveling
to Washington DC to raise support for HR 2499, the Lymphedema Diagnosis and Treatment
Cost Saving Act of 2011!
As part of this trip, organized by the Lymphedema Advocacy Group, participants will
conduct a Staff Briefing to educate Congress about lymphedema and the importance
of this bill.

To ensure good turnout at the Staff Briefing we need your help with a very quick
and easy but important task.

Please go to www.LymphedemaTreatmentAct.org and visit the "Contact Your Representative"
and "Contact Each Of Your Senators" pages.

The template letter has been temporarily changed to an invitation for Congressional
staff to attend the HR 2499 Staff Briefing taking place on Thursday, Nov 3rd, 2011.
Please complete your name and address to send this invitation to your Representative
and Senators' offices. This will only take a couple moments of your time so please
do your part to support passage of this bill!

For questions or additional information please contact Heather Ferguson at info@LymphedemaTreatmentAct.org.

Show your support to our many lymphedema patients who need our help desperately.

Many thanks,

The NLN Staff

Giuliana Rancic is a host of E! News, has a reality TV show, a beat on the Fashion Police, and a fitness program.

She's married, but doesn't have kids yet. Giuliana and husband Bill were working with a fertility specialist, and while getting ready to do an in vitro fertilization procedure, she got sent for a mammogram.

A breast lump appeared, and her plans got tossed in a heap. Here's what's up next for her.

It takes guts and talent to be a showgirl in Vegas. Having a wonderful figure is a requirement, and being in good shape is a must. And while it's not written in a contract, having a matched set of breasts is necessary for most of those costumes.

But when a showgirl recovers from breast cancer and can't afford reconstruction, what's a sequined lady to do? Here's how Alisa Savoretti is helping uninsured women recover.
