Regular exercise has numerous health benefits. Historically, individuals with lymphedema or at risk for lymphedema were recommended to avoid aerobic or resistance exercise because exercising was thought to be unsafe. However, research has investigated the safety of exercise and impact on lymphedema outcomes. Additionally, exercise is a component of complete decongestive therapy, the standard of care for management of lymphedema. This NLN MicroConference will cover exercise recommendations including frequency, intensity, and mode of exercise for individuals with or at risk for lymphedema. A focus will be to provide the best available evidence for prescribing exercise for general health benefits and lymphedema management. Research and recommendations for exercise to reduce the risk of lymphedema will be discussed. Cases studies will be presented to illustrate concepts.
