From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Since I was stuck with having breast cancer, I wanted to have something "easy" like Stage 0 or Stage 1. I was a Cancer Virgin, with much to learn. I wound up with Stage 2, but I survived anyway.

Stage 2 Breast Cancer is Complicated but Survivable
My journey started with a shy breast lump that took it's own sweet time to grow - until it turned into a 2cm lump. Yuck! I suddenly became an angry cancer patient. But that made me start doing my own health research. Learn more about your own diagnosis - it really helps you get through the treatment process.

Having a Lumpectomy
I arrived at my surgeon's office with a bag of cotton balls. I handed these to my surgeon before he did my lumpectomy, and said, "Here, show me how much tissue you're going to remove." He kindly squeezed two balls together and explained where he was going to start working. Strangely enough I felt better and worse, at the same time.

Getting Your Comprehensive Diagnosis
Did the Devil invent cancer? I guess so, since they say, "the devil is in the details," and there are so many details included in a cancer diagnosis that it's worse than trying to figure your odds in Las Vegas at the craps tables. Gathering up all the factors that make up your diagnosis can be mind-boggling, but it has to be done.

From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
Breast cancer isn't on the schedule in high school. In fact, I wish no children (or adults) ever had to deal with it. But this week we have a story about a brave girl who fought it and won.

Teen With Rare Breast Tumor Conquers Cancer
When I was 14, all I wanted to do was learn how to use makeup and get good grades. It seemed hard at the time, but a young girl in Nashville has been facing a much tougher task. She's doing well with some help from a great support team.

Phyllodes Tumor - Rare Breast Cancer
Very few breast masses lodge in in the connective tissue of your breast, to become a sarcoma. That's what the phyllodes tumor does. Most of these turn out to be benign, but some develop into malignancy. They are not staged or treated like carcinomas, but they do need attention.

Stage 1 Breast Cancer Successfully Treated
My surgeon kept saying how young I was (46) and how tiny my tumor was (1 cm) and what a good thing it was that we caught it early. I... Read more

Daily Life

From Pam Stephan, your Guide to Breast Cancer
When a breast tumor is small and hasn't shed any cells, it may be early stage and very treatable. Many older patients are treated with lumpectomy and hormone therapy alone. But is that good enough?

Post-Lumpectomy Radiation Prevents Recurrence and Mastectomy
Women who are 70 and over with early-stage breast cancer aren't always offered the full array of treatments to prevent recurrence. A new study shows that those who had lumpectomy and radiation fared better than those who had surgery only. Are standards about to change again?

Lumpectomy - Surgery for Breast Cancer
A lumpectomy is done to remove just the tumor and a small margin of tissue around it. Your breast may have a dimple or a "dent" in it afterwards, but you will still have a breast. Learn what to expect from a lumpectomy.

10 Radiation Treatment Myths
Only in comic books do people get exposed to radiation and then become either: gross monsters or fabulous superheroes. Medical radiation for cancer isn't perfect, but it can help prevent a recurrence. Here's what a radiologist has to say.

Hormonal Treatments for Breast Cancer
An overwhelming number of breast cancer tumors are fueled by hormones. In order to reduce the risk of your cancer coming back, your oncologist will prescribe 5 years of hormonal treatments. These drugs are just about the exact opposite of hormone replacement therapy - they will lower your hormone levels to starve any leftover cancer cells. But not all these drugs work just alike.
